Emergency could be imposed: Minister Thapa

Home Minister Kamal Thapa on Saturday said that the government could impose a state of emergency "if needed" during the upcoming protest program announced by the seven-party alliance (SPA).

In an interview with the program Bahas on Kantipur TV, Thapa claimed that the government has credible information of Maoist infiltration in the SPA-called general strikes from April 6-9 in the capital and there was "high possibility of escalation of violence".

"If the situation goes out of control the government can declare a state of emergency in accordance with constitutional provisions," he said.

Thapa also said that the SPA was trying to provoke city dwellers on the pretext of protest activity.
